KidSport to benefit from Co-op Fuel Good Day

Sep 15, 2020 | 10:34 AM

For every litre of fuel sold today at the Air Ronge and La Ronge Lake Country Co-op Gas Bars, 10 cents will be donated to La Ronge and Area KidSport.

It’s all part of the cooperative’s Fuel Good Day, which is being held all day at Co-op gas stations across western Canada. That’s according to director of marketing and community relations Jill Dumanski, who said back in June there was an application process to determine who this year’s recipient charity would be. Several local charities decided to apply.

“That was a tough decision, but we chose La Ronge and area KidSport just because we feel they are really important in the community, especially right now due to COVID where some families can’t necessarily afford to put their kids into extracurricular activities,” she said. “Obviously, physical activity is very important for growth and socialization. We thought it would be a perfect fit this year to choose them.”

The other recipients with Lake Country Co-op are Big Brothers Big Sisters of Prince Albert, Kinsmen Club of Shellbrook, Torch River Riders Inc. in Choiceland and Handiworks in Nipawin.

In 2019, the charity in La Ronge to benefit from Fuel Good Day was the Early Childhood Intervention Program, which is part of Children North. Dumanski was unsure how much the total donated in La Ronge last year was, but she noted it was only five cents on every litre sold. The total payout in 2019 was $10,322 and that went to five charities in the Lake Country Co-op region.

“Last year, we donated five cents per litre and this year we upped it to 10 cents per litre,” she said. “It was a very successful Fuel Good Day.”

Throughout the last 13 years, KidSport has been a valuable asset to the tri-communities having helped more than 2,300 youth with registration fees and equipment. In total, $98,000 has gone towards individuals while $79,000 was spent on sports clubs and programs.

KidSport Committee Member Kristy McDougall said she was happy to learn the non-profit was chosen considering their major fundraiser of the year was cancelled due to the coronavirus back in May. She said the money raised today will be spent on local individuals or clubs.

“If you take your picture at the gas bar while you are gassing up or take a picture of your receipt, post it to our Facebook page and we got draws coinciding as a thank you to everybody for participating today,” McDougall said. “This is going to be our fundraiser for the year, so we hope everyone goes out and gasses up everything they have.”
