The Mann Art Gallery in Prince Albert, has appointed a new director/curator. Marcus Miller will take over the position from Lana Wilson who will be returning to her previous role as gallery educator. The changes take effect the first week of October.

The gallery’s previous director Jesse Campbell stepped down from the position on March 11, with Lana Wilson filling the role until now. The current pandemic delayed their efforts in filling the vacant position.

“I am really looking forward to going back to the educator role, and I know that it will be wonderful for the gallery to get some new energy with a new person in here,” said Wilson. “This year it is also time to prepare a new strategic plan, so this will be an ideal time with a new director coming in.”

Miller has worked across Canada and internationally as a curator, teacher, art critic, and artist. He will be coming to the Mann Art Gallery from the University of Saskatchewan where for the past eight years he was director of the Gordon Snelgrove Gallery, as well as curator of public programming and participation.

Due to the current pandemic Wilson said Miller will be coming into a leadership position in unusual circumstances.

“We already had a successful summer with some new innovations,” Wilson said. “We’re looking forward to seeing what ideas he has and to see what his feedback is on what we did do this summer.”

Guests at the art gallery may recognize Miller from his first stint working in Northern Saskatchewan during his time as director of the Allan Sapp Gallery in North Battleford.

“He will be very involved with arranging the November exhibition,” Wilson said. “Our September to October show starts this week on Sept. 17 and will run until Oct. 22.”

The November exhibition at the gallery is one that was supposed to run during the spring but was pushed back due to COVID-19.

In a press release, Miller said he is aware the venue has an important role in the art scene as Saskatchewan’s most northern public art gallery and is eager to contribute to its continued growth as well as community engagement. He will be looking forward to meeting artists in and around Prince Albert, as well as more northern communities.

The Mann Art Gallery has a permanent collection of almost 4,000 artworks, and thousands of participants each year engage in the education program.
