Melfort Food Bank asking gardeners to donate any extra or unwanted produce

Sep 16, 2020 | 8:00 AM

Area gardeners are being asked to consider the Melfort Food Bank this harvest season.

Secretary of the Food Bank, Ellen Zuck said they have seen a boost in monetary donations throughout the pandemic but fresh food is welcomed as well.

“We have a big cooler so we can keep things fresh and clients really appreciate the fresh garden produce,” Zuck said.

The Food Bank has seen some generous donations of green beans, cucumbers, potatoes and carrots over the past couple of weeks. Mud and excess dirt should be removed from produce but it should not be washed or the skin becomes disturbed and will not keep as long.

Donations can be dropped off on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., or outside of those hours by appointment. They can always also use things like canned meat and fish, canned fruits and vegetables, flour, oatmeal and rice.

The number of those utilizing the food bank is beginning to increase as the summer comes to a close and the fall and Christmas season approach.

“It was pretty quiet over the summer but sometimes it is anyways while people are doing other things, but it is picking up now,” Zuck said. “We are anticipating that it will pick up even more with school being back on as well.”

The Food Bank is open every other Thursday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and will be open on Sept. 24.

Volunteers are also needed to help hand out hampers to clients. Anyone interested in becoming a board member can call the food bank at 306-752-4448.
