Humboldt Fire Department captain seeking spot on city council

The captain of the Humboldt Fire Department has decided it’s time for a change and wants to serve his community in a different way by running for city council.

Darcy Leonew has called Humboldt home for the past 52 years and has been part of the fire department for 40 of those years.

“To me, that is a big feat for myself and especially as captain for the past five years so I’ll retire as captain so I am really pleased with that too,” Leonew said. “I can give back to my town by doing something like this.”

Leonew spent time on many boards in the community including Humboldt Emergency Relief Organization for 11 years, Ducks Unlimited for 14 years, and minor ball for 25 years.

“When I start something, I go a long way with it,” Leonew said.

Running for council just seemed like the right fit at this stage in Leonew’s life.

“I really think I can bring something back to the city if I was given the opportunity to do so,” Leonew said.

He hopes council finishes up any projects that are currently already in the works and then proceed forward from there.

“I’m not going to make any promises that I can’t keep, that’s just not my way,” Leonow said. “I really do think I can offer the city a lot and I have been here long enough to know my city very well.”

Leonow and his wife Shirley created their life in Humboldt where they brought up three daughters as well.

“I love it here and I will retire here, this City of Humboldt is just me,” Leonew said.

Saskatchewan municipal elections take place Monday, Nov. 9. The deadline for nominations is Oct. 7.
