Positive COVID-19 case has connection to Foam Lake Elementary, school closes out of precaution

The Foam Lake Elementary school in the Horizon School Division is closed for today as a precautionary measure and will re-open on Tuesday

A case of COVID-19 was diagnosed in an individual with a connection to the school.

Public health continues its work surrounding the case and the decision was made to close out of an abundance of caution according to Director of Education Kevin Garinger.

“It’s not to indicate that the virus is in anyway in our school, it is just to make sure that public health is able to perform the work that they need to do,” Garinger said.

At this time, the school of approximately 130 students will resume classes on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

“The precautionary nature of dealing with this pandemic has been critical, both in our schools from a preventative stand-point but also within communities,” Garinger said. “Now, when we have a case, the precautions that we take will add to the level of safety and allow health to do their work.”

The Foam Lake Composite School remains open but the outdoor graduation ceremony set for today has been postponed.

“Gatherings at this time are certainly not something that we want to move forward with as public health is dealing with this important work,” Garinger said.

Garinger added that the main focus right now is the individual that has contracted the virus and their health, safety, and wellness.

During these difficult times and as thanksgiving approaches, Garinger said everyone has so much to be thankful for including their health.

“We will continue to think about the individual that is battling the virus within that community,” he said.

Public Health will be contacting community members who may have been in close contact with the case and will provide direction.

Residents in the Foam Lake area that are not contacted by Public Health have not been exposed to the virus in connection to this specific case.

Everyone is reminded to monitor for signs or symptoms of COVID-19 and get in contact with the HealthLine at 811 and remain at home if exhibiting any symptoms. The virus spreads from person to person by large respiratory droplets.

Additional information will be provided to families as it becomes available.
