Battlefords chamber readies to film provincial all-candidates forum

Oct 16, 2020 | 3:06 PM

The Battlefords Chamber of Commerce plans to film an all-candidates forum this Sunday for hopefuls running in the Battlefords riding in the upcoming provincial election.

The event is not open to the public due to COVID-19 precautions related to social distancing and capacity restrictions. The forum will be broadcast on Access 7 community TV channels next week, with the date(s) still to be confirmed.

Chief operating officer Linda Machniak said the local chamber is glad to be able to step up to host the forum, even during the pandemic.

“It’s something we have done for so many years in many different elections,” she said. “This one will certainly be different, but we are pleased to be able to do it.”

The following candidates have confirmed their attendance: Jeremy Cockrill (Saskatchewan Party), Amber Stewart (New Democratic Party), and Harry Zamonsky (Progressive Conservative Party) will be participating. Joey Reynolds who is running for the Green Party has not confirmed his attendance to date.

As part of the process, the chamber members will submit their questions in advance for the candidates. The local media will also have a chance to ask questions.

The candidates will have an opportunity to present their opening and closing remarks. They will also be able to raise an issue that is significant to them as well as to the Battlefords community.

The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce Provincial Election Policy Pillars will also be addressed during the event.

“Because with COVID, we cannot have a public forum as we have had in the past, we have planned a bit of a modified version of an all-candidates forum,” Machniak said. “We’re hoping to have some really good discussion on Sunday when we are filming.”
