Dempster looks to improve safety for residents if elected to Nipawin council

A former salesman is looking to run for council in the Town of Nipawin.

John Dempster has lived in and around Nipawin on and off for about 30 years now and hopes to earn a seat on town council in the upcoming election. Dempster said he had been asked on prior occasions to run for council, but work and children in activities took up a lot of his time.

“Now I don’t have either one to stop me,” he said. “So, I can devote all my time and attention and do the best job I’m able to do.”

Now retired, Dempster worked for Nipawin Chrysler during his working time in Nipawin and says he was able to meet a lot of people through that, and he was able to develop a good sense of business at the same time. He was also involved with coaching minor hockey in Nipawin as well.

One of the major topics that Dempster believes needs to be covered is safety for the residents of Nipawin.

“Over the summer, I was watching Facebook, and there was so much stealing, and vandalism, and all that going on,” Dempster told northeastNOW. “And I don’t know what I’m able to do about it, but it is definitely something I’m going to look very deeply into and see what the town council could do to help alleviate that problem.”

Dempster also has a psychology certificate, and is something he believes can help him on council. He said he’s able to listen and understand people’s sides very well.

As one of four new candidates campaigning for a spot on council, Dempster is hoping there is some change to get a good mix of new and returning councillors.

“The three that were in for the last four years, would be able to show the new guys the ropes and help lead them in the right direction,” Dempster said.

Voters head to the polls on Nov. 9.
