UPDATE: The On Air for Healthcare Radiothon is still going as strong as ever today! People are coming by the CJNB radio station parking lot drive-through drop-off site, calling the Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation and visiting the online site to make their donations. The total so far is $52,621.

You can donate online at buhfoundation.com or by calling Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation at 306-446-6652 or toll free at 1-888-946-4284.

Don’t forget to give!

Now in its fifth year, the On Air for Healthcare Radiothon is on again. It’s an opportunity for people to show their support to benefit healthcare in the region. This year’s capital campaign is to purchase new equipment for the Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH).

The Radiothon event runs from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 23.

New this year, people are asked to visit the Drive Through Donation site located at the CJNB radio station parking lot in North Battleford where they can hand over their donation to one of the volunteers – whether that is cash, a cheque, or by using their credit or debit card. There will also be a coin toss for people to donate their loose change.

“If listeners are inspired to give, they can follow the signs which will take them through the back alley behind 100 St. [at 17th Avenue], and come through our parking lot, headed east. Then, pull out back onto 100 Street after giving their donation at the front door,” Nic Fransoo, program director for CJNB, CJNS, Q98 and 93.3TheROCK, said. “They don’t even have to get out of their vehicle. Nobody needs to park, just wait in line for a little bit, give the donation, and then charitable tax receipts will be mailed out at a later date.”

Traditionally the Radiothon is held in May but it was postponed this year due to COVID-19 precautions. The Radiothon is taking place remotely this time around, so no donors will be allowed at the BUH site.

People can also donate online at buhfoundation.com or by calling Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation at 306-446-6652 or toll free at 1-888-946-4284.

Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH) Foundation and CJNB/Q98/93.3 The Rock/ BattlefordsNOW of the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group and presenting sponsor, Fisher’s Drug Store, are again partnering on the campaign to raise funds to provide enriched healthcare for the Battlefords and surrounding communities.

“We bring the Radiothon together and present it to our community in the hopes that they would support us once again this year,” Fransoo said.

The theme of the fundraiser this year is Diagnostic Detectives: Solving Your Health Mysteries.

The campaign will raise funds for new equipment and technology for the lab at BUH.

The BUH medical laboratory provides biochemistry, hematology, transfusion medicine, urinalysis, microbiology and pathology services to patients and families of the Battlefords as well as surrounding areas.

“[The campaign] is really important because it’s for new equipment for our laboratory,” Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation Executive Director Claudette McGuire said. “Lab tests and their corresponding results are part of how a doctor diagnosis a patient and provides the proper course of treatment. They need the lab values in order to have the treatment. The quicker the lab values come in, the quicker the treatment, and that of course saves lives.”

McGuire invites also people to make a challenge to encourage others to donate to help the cause too.

“We’ve already been accepting donations as we speak,” she said. “The chair of our board of the foundation has donated $500 and is challenging all other retired healthcare workers to donate as well. Many times people will challenge others. Grandparents will challenge other grandparents, teachers will challenge teachers. You just try and provide more ways to make people say ‘Yes, I can step up to the plate and help out with the hospital.'”
