Mayoral candidates forum this Tuesday to be live-streamed

The Battlefords Chamber of Commerce plans to hold a mayoral candidates forum for those running in the City of North Battleford’s upcoming election.

The forum takes place Tuesday, Oct. 27 starting at 6 p.m.

The event is not open to the public due to COVID-19 restrictions, but will be live-streamed on the chamber and the Downtown North Battleford Business Improvement District Facebook pages. It will also be filmed by Access Communications to air on Access 7 TV next week, prior to the municipal election.

Local chamber Chief Operating Officer Linda Machniak said some members of the chamber board who were available stepped up to help with live-streaming the event.

“We appreciate their support, and hope we are able to provide that extra opportunity for people to see and view the candidates,” she said.

The chamber will accept submitted questions both from chamber members and the general public for the candidates until 4 p.m. on Oct. 27. Submissions need to be sent to the chamber’s email address at: b.chamber@sasktel.net.

Five candidates are vying for the mayoral seat: incumbent Ryan Bater, David Gillan, Lois Laing, Misa Nikolic and James Sieben. All candidates have confirmed their attendance with the exception of Sieben who the chamber said it is still waiting to hear back from at this point.

“The chamber of commerce has for years provided opportunities for members and the public to participate in forums, whether it is for federal elections, provincial elections, or municipal elections,” Machniak said. “This year of course because of COVID it is a very different world. So public forums are not in the offing. But we have tried to do what we can to allow folks to at least see and view the candidates.”

Last week the chamber had a provincial candidates forum that was filmed for Access Communications community TV, so it is glad to now offer a mayoral candidates forum also.

Machniak said while the chamber would have hoped to also provide a forum for the municipal councillor candidates as well, because of scheduling and logistics challenges that was simply not possible.
