NEOSS hoping calendar sales will replace funds from ‘Walk a Mile’

Members of the North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS) hope to replace the funds from ‘Walk a Mile in Her shoes’ through calendar sales.

The Walk a Mile event typically brings in around $15,000 each year.

NEOSS Executive Director Louise Schweitzer said the calendars will sell for $25 each.

“It is a 12-month calendar with months purchased by businesses in exchange for being featured for a month and add spaces were sold,” Schweitzer said.

The calender is themed around the Walk a Mile in her Shoes event as well with local photographers providing services for the pictures in the calendar.

On top of being a fundraiser for NEOSS, it’s also about raising awareness about domestic, sexualized and gender violence in our communities.

“It’s about removing some of the stigma about it and about putting your foot forward and saying ‘I’m against domestic, sexualized and gender violence,'” Schweitzer said.

According to Schweitzer, it takes a community to keep organizations going as well as creating these types of fundraisers.

“We appreciate the businesses that bought a page as well as the individuals who stepped up to be on the pages and put themselves forward in the shoes,” Schweitzer said.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the staff at NEOSS to really think outside of the box with their recent fundraisers including hosting a drive-thru supper, an online art auction and other auctions and an online raffle.

“Our team has stepped up to the plate to really reach out beyond their limits of comfort to make it happen,” Schweitzer said.

Those who purchase a calendar will also be entered to win $2,000 worth in prizes in December 2021. Calendars are available at the NEOSS office or through participating businesses.

“Each one of the dollars spent here goes directly back into the community and does go toward helping victims that are often unseen,” she said.
