Next winter storm to miss La Ronge after 18 centimeters of snow fell Thursday

A large winter storm headed for southern Saskatchewan is not expected to reach La Ronge.

That’s according to Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang, who said residents can expect only a couple centimeters of snow over the weekend. The heavy snow in the forecast will begin near Waskesiu and snowfall amounts will increase south from there.

“Combined with that wind, any travel on Sunday into the southern part of the province is highly discouraged,” Lang said. “It looks like the heaviest band of precipitation will go from about Swift Current through to Hudson Bay and that’s a band of about 50 centimeters worth, so there’s going to be some big snowfalls with this.”

On Thursday, however, a slow-moving system brought between 15 to 18 centimeters of snow to La Ronge. Lang explained the system, which also triggered a snowfall warning, was due to warm air from the South and cold air from the North mixing together.

Environment Canada is forecasting periods of snow in La Ronge tonight with a low of -11 Celsius. Saturday will be mainly cloudy with a high of -7 C and a low of -11 C at night with a chance of flurries.

Sunday is also expected to be cloudy with a high of -8 C and a low of -14 C.
