George narrowly defeats Lang in Melfort mayoral race

Nov 9, 2020 | 10:18 PM

The mayoral race in Melfort was a photo finish.

As of Monday night, Glenn George has been elected as mayor with 583 votes compared to Rick Lang who received 578 votes.

“I don’t know what I thought it would be,” George told northeastNOW shortly after hearing the news of his victory. “But it’s definitely a lot closer than I thought it would be.”

George and Lang both said the inclement weather had a part in the results of the election with only 1,161 ballots being cast. Neither had any idea what the reason for the shift in votes was but George said he’s excited to be elected as mayor.

“I like the way the city is going, and I want it to continue,” he said. “And I wanted to be the mayor, I’ve been elected and I’m happy.”

George added he has nothing bad to say about Lang, and that it was a great and positive campaign that was run by both sides. The newly elected mayor was previously on council for 11 years, first being elected in 2009.

Lang told northeastNOW the people have spoken, and this is how democracy works.

“It’s disappointing, because I felt that I had worked really hard in the entire eight years that I had been mayor,” he said. “And I felt that we had achieved things like never before in the City of Melfort.”

Lang added the minimal separation of votes makes it a tough pill to swallow, but he wishes George all the best in his new position.

“I’ll wish Glenn all of the success moving forward,” Lang said. “And I hope he does a terrific job, because that’s what the City of Melfort deserves.”

First elected as mayor in 2012, Lang was first elected to council in 2003.

As for the councilors who will join George in the chambers, new candidate Tara Muntain received the most votes with 859, followed by April Phillips, Trent Mitchell, Brian Enge, Doug Terry, and Tim Hoenmans. Enge returns to council after a first being elected in 2012, and just missing out in 2016. Phillips is returning for her third term, while Mitchell and Hoenmans are heading into their second terms on council. Terry has been part of council for a total of 19 years.

The results are unofficial at the time of publishing and will become official as of noon on Tuesday, Nov. 10.
