City continues to uncover from snowstorm

Nov 10, 2020 | 12:00 PM

City services are moving closer to normal today after a winter storm brought things to a halt Monday morning.

Snow clearing efforts have nearly progressed to the end of Priority 1 streets, consisting of major arterials and emergency routes. Soon, city crews will be moving on to Priority 2 streets, which are collector roads, city bus routes, and school zones.

After cancelling recycling pickup for designated areas yesterday, garbage crews are out today and are hoping to resume services as usual.

Jeff Da Silva, operations manager with the City of Prince Albert’s public works department, said they will monitor the situation through the day.

“We’re going to play it by ear today and see how the pickup goes. I’m in contact with the crews and if there’s any issues, we can address them as they come,” Da Silva said.

Those who missed out on recycling pickup yesterday will have to wait until their next cycle, while all other areas are not expected to be impacted at this point.

Da Silva asked that residents continue to keep their vehicles off the streets if at all possible, allowing road clearing equipment to access entire streets rather than having to return to certain areas at a later time.

He also noted people can reach out with specific issues and concerns.

“Crews are working hard, we’re going to get everything cleared up. If you have any specific inquiries or concerns, call the public works mainline at 953-4900 and we’ll work in a priority manner to get those addressed,” Da Silva said.

paNOW has heard from at least one business that’s unhappy about snow being plowed and piled up outside which is restricting parking. Roadways manager Brent Kennedy said anyone with concerns like this can call city hall and they will go out and assess the situation.

Transit resumes

After a stalled start on Monday, Prince Albert Transit is operational today while dealing with certain limitations based on access.

Transportation manager Keri Sapsford pointed out that certain locations are dealing with worse conditions than others.

“The East Hill especially has been very impacted, we can’t get around to most of those routes,” Sapsford said.

As snow clearing crews progress to Priority 2, bus routes will be getting cleared off, but in the meantime, users need to be aware of some modifications.

“We want people to know that buses probably aren’t going to be running on time today. They’re getting stuck, they’re having to maneuver through ice and snow,” Sapsford explains.

Those looking for more information on current bus routes can access transitlivepa.com for real-time updates.

In a media release that came later today, the city wants to remind the public not to shovel their snow onto the street as it is against the city’s traffic bylaw. Those who are caught doing it could potentially receive a fine.

They also want the public to know Little Red River Park and Knotty Pine Bistro will remain closed until the road leading to the Cosmo Lodge is cleared.
