Meadow Lake City Council sworn in Monday

Meadow Lake’s City Council is officially set to conduct business as usual.

Each member took their oath of office Monday evening, which was followed by a brief orientation for the new council members.

Mayor Merlin Seymour said the night went smoothly.

“Just went over the processes of council as an introduction for the newcomers and a brushup for the incumbents,” he said.

No policy decisions will be made until Monday night, where their first official meeting as a new council will take place. Seymour said there will be enough to do in the coming weeks that there was no need to overload incoming councillors Mauri Young and Clay DeBray with too much information.

“We were doing business, just not making any big decisions, because we knew there’s new council and we definitely want their input,” Seymour said. “[On Monday] we will be getting at it.”

One of the items that may require discussion is how life will change following measures from the province related to the COVID-19 pandemic, such as mandatory masking in indoor public places. Seymour said they’re waiting on direction from the province on how enforcement of the mandate will work, mentioning there is a toll free number on the SHA website related to COVID-19 compliance.

“But far as the RCMP going around and enforcing it, up until now, no, that is not what they do,” he said.

The Government of Saskatchewan announced Tuesday that mandatory masking is now province-wide.
