Snowy conditions for Battlefords drivers

Nov 19, 2020 | 3:16 PM

Battlefords residents will have to exercise caution as road conditions worsen again with another blanket of snow.

Environment Canada is predicting five centimetres of snow for the area Thursday, with some additional snow fall late in the evening.

Stewart Schafer, director of Utility Services and Infrastructure Services for the city of North Battleford, said this snowfall won’t be as bad as the previous weekend, though there’s still work being done related to the dump of more than 30 centimetres that occurred two weeks ago.

“We’re still working on getting the roads back to normal again and we’ll continue working until they are,” he said.

Schafer said residents need to remember to not to park where there’s a sign saying no parking on the street during that particular day, so that workers can properly complete snow removal.

“It’s really hard for our equipment to get around and move the snow out of the driving lanes,” he said.

While the snowfall isn’t as extreme as before, Deputy Fire Chief Geoff Thompson said the warmer conditions have made the roads a lot slicker than they would be otherwise. The fire department attended at least one rollover on Wednesday.

“The moment the temperature goes up and things start to slick up, especially when there’s snow on the ground, that’s when it’s going to get you,” Thompson said.

This means drivers should continue to use caution while out on the road. Thompson said as long as residents adhere to traffic rules and safety guidelines, they should be fine.

“As long as you keep your speed within check, it’s not bad,” he said.

After strong winds come through the area, it’s expected to clear by Friday morning, with temperatures predicted to warm close to 0 C on Saturday.
