Application period opens for Christmas hamper project

Applications are open to apply for the 2020 La Ronge Christmas Hamper Project organized by the Kikinahk Friendship Centre.

“For the most part, it’s for anyone who has a low income,” facilitator Susan Smallwood said. “Families who are on social assistance are certainly eligible for hampers and, because we have COVID now, we know there’s going to be a lot of families who had their incomes shrunk because maybe they have been laid off or hours have been cut back. We certainly want to encourage those families who normally wouldn’t apply for things like this to do so as well.”

While the criteria is based on income and number of children, Smallwood noted they aren’t strict about it. While in 2019 about 140 hampers were delivered to tri-community residents, organizers have a target of 300 hampers this year. Each hamper includes a turkey, potatoes, stuffing, cranberries, frozen vegetables, mandarin oranges, bread and butter.

Smallwood explained Thursday was the first day residents could call into Kikinahk and apply for a hamper, noting 60 people have already done so. Families can contact Kikinahk to apply, but are encouraged do so if they are receiving programming from the Early Childhood Intervention Program or another similar service.

“They are going to help us by making sure their clients and their families on their programs get their applications filled in,” she said.

The deadline to apply is Dec. 11 by 4 p.m. and hamper delivery will be staggered. Kikinahk program families will receive hampers Dec. 18, followed by on-reserve residents Dec. 22, and Air Ronge and La Ronge Dec. 23.

The approximate value of 300 food hampers is $30,000 and the funding comes from various benefactors.
