Emergency shelters receive additional provincial funding

Nov 20, 2020 | 12:32 PM

Additional government funding is coming to emergency shelters across the province.

The Government of Saskatchewan is directing $171,000 to support shelters in their work to keep staff and clients safe, on top of the $4 million annually provided and pandemic response supports that were announced in April. This funding is also meant to help emergency shelters meet extra cost pressures brought on from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Five organizations are receiving the additional funding, with locations in multiple communities. Some of those include the Lloydminster Men’s Shelter, YWCA Cold Weather Shelter Prince Albert and the Lighthouse Serving the Battlefords.

“A number of sectors have needed a helping hand during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Social Services Minister Lori Carr said. “We continue to support Saskatchewan’s emergency shelters that have done incredible work to adjust and respond to COVID-19.”

Other locations include YWCA Regina, The Lighthouse Supported Living Saskatoon location, Salvation Army locations in Regina and Saskatoon and Souls Harbour Rescue Mission which has locations in Regina and Moose Jaw.

The Lighthouse Serving the Battlefords did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
