Carrot River hockey game for Movember still searching for players

An annual fundraiser for Movember aims to hit the ice in a week’s time.

Dylan Custaloe from the Carrot River RCMP has been a “Mo Bro” for 11 years and is hosting the second shinny charity game in Carrot River, with funds going to the Movember Foundation. Custaloe began the shinny tradition when he was in Fort Qu’Appelle and has helped raise over $6,000 in a decade for men’s health awareness, including prostate and testicular cancer, and suicide.

“I’ve had several family members that have had cancer,” Custaloe told northeastNOW. “Mental health is very important for men. I just wanted to put awareness out there so men can be aware of what’s going on. I think now with all the advertising about mental health, it’s so much more out there and people are talking about it.”

The hockey games have seen anywhere from $295 and $1,377 donated to the Movember Foundation. Custaloe also accepts pledges and runs kilometres to fundraise; he surpassed his 60km goal and aims to reach 120 before November’s end.

However, registration for the hockey game have been slow to start. Custaloe said only three of the 30 maximum slots have been filled.

“There’s a lot of room. Masks are mandatory in the arena… players also have to wear a mask when they come into the arena. The masks have to stay on until the helmet goes on. We’re also limited with how many spectators we’re allowed to have,” he said.

Custaloe is optimistic that he’ll be able to eclipse his fundraising goal of $500 in 2020. He hopes there will be a game, but it depends on the Saskatchewan Health Authority.

“If they say that facilities are shut down, then that’s the only thing that will prevent us from playing hockey,” he said.

The hockey fundraiser takes place at Carrot River Arena on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 3:45 pm.
