Kindersley enacts revenge over Hawks

The Kindersley Klippers were able to atone for a loss on home ice Friday against the Hawks, picking up a 2-1 victory in Nipawin Saturday.

Doing the damage for the Klippers in the backend of the weekend home-and-home series was former Hawk Eric Sorensen. He scored both of the Klippers’ goals in the third period, giving him three in the two-game set this weekend against the Hawks.

Michael Makarenko scored his second goal of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season. The Hawks three-year veteran said the loss was a disappointing end to the weekend.

“Yesterday, we thought we didn’t play as well and today we come out flying and I thought we deserved a better fate. It’s a disappointing end to the weekend for sure,” Makarenko said.

The Nipawin powerplay has started the year strong helping them to their 4-1 record. Friday, they scored twice on the man advantage, Saturday, the team couldn’t capitalize on seven opportunities. Makarenko said the group had chances to score.

“We kept getting pucks to the net and almost scored a few times,” he said. “We need to bear down on those moments and bury the puck.”

Saskatoon’s Chase Hamm made his SJHL debut in goal for the Hawks making 20 saves. Nipawin fired 26 shots on Matthew Pesenti.

The two teams are slated to meet each other again on Nov. 27 and 28 starting in Nipawin before a Saturday night contest in Kindersley. Makarenko said the team will regroup over the week.

“We need to have a good week of practice; we know when we play our best we can definitely win. We’re looking forward to these next two games,” he said.

Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.
