Great Plains College promotes ‘Give Where You Live’

‘Give where you live.’

Just four simple words with a rhyming pattern; but for Great Plains College, it’s a call to action to local communities throughout the region invited to take part.

The College chose the slogan as their theme to encourage individuals, businesses, and organizations to participate in “Giving Tuesday” on Dec. 1, and invest in the students who hope to become leaders for their communities in the future.

Funds raised from the initiative will go directly towards entrance scholarships and early entrance awards for incoming students enrolled in full-time student, loan-eligible programs at any of the college’s seven locations throughout the province.

Those campus locations are included in the Biggar, Kindersley, Maple Creek, Martensville, Rosetown, Swift Current and Warman communities.

Donor services coordinator for the college, Dianne Sletten, highlighted just how important the contributions are to students’ education, as approximately $216,000 will be provided to over 170 students in scholarships and awards during the current academic year.

As a school, Sletten said they are extremely grateful for all support shown by the various campus and surrounding communities across the region.

“For us, the community support and the business support for all of our campuses is huge,” she said. “We will be grateful for any donations we receive and that money will all go towards our entrance scholarship program so we can continue support our students in their educational goals.”

Sletten added locally-raised donations will also be matched to a maximum amount through the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship program. A program she said, “recognizes local community investment and provides additional funding to benefit the opportunities for students.”

The official day of giving is Dec. 1, but the link for online donations is expected to go live this week. Those interested in donating to support a student in their community, Dec. 1, can click here.
