The newly elected council in the City of Humboldt was officially sworn in on Monday, Nov. 23 at the city’s regular council meeting.

On Nov. 9, Michael Behiel was elected mayor with 760 of 1,439 votes in total. He said being mayor has been a process he’s been working through ever since election day.

“It really hasn’t quite sunk in that I’m now the mayor that needs to make all of those big decisions,” Behiel told northeastNOW.

Behiel said next up for him and fellow council members is budget talks which will get going in a couple weeks’ time. He said they also want to continue building Humboldt.

“Carrying on the momentum that was created by the previous mayor and council, and continue on that great work,” he said. “And expand it even more.”

On council, Behiel is joined by former Mayor Robe Muench who received the most votes of any of the council candidates. Behiel said he wanted to see Muench run for mayor again, but he’s also very grateful that Muench is still around on council to work together.

Meanwhile, council is filled out by returnees Larry Jorgenson, and Roger Nordick, as well as newcomers Roger Korte, and Amanda Klitch. Behiel said after sitting down with his new council members, there’s a lot of excitement to work with them.

“I knew some of them. I didn’t know some of the other ones,” Behiel said. “There was a little bit of uncertainty, but having met with them and dealt with them for the first night, and do some orientation sessions, I’m very excited and very happy that we’ve got such a fantastic group.”
