Curling season on pause; Melfort club planning turkey dinner fundraiser

The curling season will be on pause for three weeks in Saskatchewan as a result of the governments latest restrictions.

All recreational activities are suspended until Dec. 17, starting on Friday, Nov. 27. in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the province.

Manager of the Melfort Curling Club Gerald MacGillivray told northeastNOW the club is trying to be optimistic about the review of restrictions by the Chief Medical Health Officer.

“Hopefully it changes so we can get back to curling or we could end up shutting down for the season because we can’t afford to have the plant running with no income,” MacGillivray said.

The senior league still took to the pebbled ice on Thursday morning and afternoon as well as the Thursday night cash league.

According to MacGillivray, the club was going above and beyond all of the previous guidelines to ensure the season continued.

“We have even had the curlers wearing masks out on the ice which none of the other clubs have be doing, but I guess it is what it is,” MacGillivray said.

Board members are planning a take-out turkey dinner on Dec.16, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the curling rink. Pre-orders are now being accepted and must be in by Dec. 11.

“We had a number of turkeys in the freezer for Christmas parties and for lunches on Tuesdays and Thursdays but those won’t be happening now,” MacGillivray said. “We have only 120 meals available and we already have a number on the list just from this morning.”

The cost is $15 per meal and the funds will go back into the curling rink maintenance.

“It will help with the cost of running the plant, especially in a year that is going to be lean to start with,” MacGillivray said. “It’s too bad but hopefully we will come out good on the other end.”

The ice will need to be scrapped at least every second day to ensure that it is still play worthy when the time returns.

The updated COVID-19 provincial health restrictions begin Nov. 27 and last until at least Dec. 17.
