Kerry Vickar Centre in Melfort pausing activities due to new health restrictions

Activities at the Kerry Vickar Centre(KVC) in Melfort will be put on hold for the next three weeks.

The additional public health measures announced by the Saskatchewan Government on Thursday saw recreational activities suspended and further restrictions on indoor public gatherings.

Kathy Gray is the program coordinator with the city, she said all they can really continue at the multi-use facility is the walking program.

“Noon-hour basketball is done now until Dec. 17, rentals for birthday parties would be tough with the no food, and performances were lowered as well,” Gray said. “I think really we all just need to be safe right now and take the two weeks.”

The restrictions were placed on indoor public banquets, conferences, and wedding and funeral receptions in public venues.

According to Gray, the recreation team has some ideas for safe, outdoor activities for families.

“We will put some energy into finding some things like we did in March when we closed down,” Gray said. “We still need to be out and about and getting fresh air while we all pull together to lower numbers.”

The restrictions are in place until Dec. 17 and are then up for review by the Chief Medical Health Officer.

It is likely the facility will not fully re-open until the new year.

“Hopefully in the new year we will start back up and the KVC will be a full house once again,” Gray said.
