Agronomy Research Update goes virtual

MELFORT, Sask. – A popular event for farmers and agronomists will have a new look this year. The Agronomy Research Update, which would normally be held over two days in Saskatoon will follow a virtual format.

Ministry of Agriculture crop extension specialist Allie Noble said the update will have four speakers each day Dec. 7 to 10 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

“We’re using the format GoToWebinar so producers and agronomists can sign up. This way they’ll be able to see presentations and hear different speakers,” Noble told farmnewsNOW. “It’s worked really well. We also did this for Crop Diagnostic Week in the summer.”

Noble said there are advantages to holding a webinar.

“We’re actually able to get some speakers who are a little further away that we might not necessarily get in a normal year,” she said.

Speakers will cover a wide variety of topics. Stephen Strelkov, a professor of plant pathology at the University of Alberta will give a clubroot update while Aaron Daigh, an associate professor of soil physics and hydrology with North Dakota State University, will discuss soil compaction. Olds College director of applied research Joy Agnew will talk about technology in agriculture. Another presenter, Barb Cade-Menun with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Swift Current will share research on phosphorus forms and cycling in Saskatchewan soils.

Noble said participants are encouraged to sign up. If you’re not able to watch a presentation live, you’ll still have a chance to check it out later.

“Register at www.prairiecca.ca and click on the What’s New tab. You’ll be able to find Agronomy Research Update 2020,” Noble said. “You’ll have to register for each day separately. Once you’ve done that you will get reminders the day and hour before.”

Noble said each session will be recorded.

“It’s really helpful for us and others to go back and double check in case you missed anything. We will have those available on the website after the event is finished,” Noble said.
