COVID-19 friendly Teddy Bear Toss being held to support Christmas Hamper Campaign

Dec 3, 2020 | 9:00 AM

The Salvation Army Christmas Hamper campaign in Melfort is still looking to get as many teddy bears to kids in need as possible.

With recent public health measures, the annual Teddy Bear Toss at a Melfort Mustangs game won’t be able to take place, but a COVID-19 friendly Teddy Bear Toss will take place at the Melfort Dairy Queen on Dec. 9.

“We’ll have a bin here from the Salvation Army, and people can kind of do a COVID style Teddy Bear Toss into the bin,” said Cassie Davis, who is the Christmas Hamper Campaign President. “All social distancing and masks are required.”

Davis said with them not being able to have the toss at a Mustang game, they didn’t want to ignore the event, or the meaning of the event altogether.

“This is just another way for us to make sure that we have enough donations to make sure everyone has a good Christmas,” she said.

At last year’s Teddy Bear Toss, well over 200 plush animals were thrown onto the ice as the Mustangs scored their first goal of the game on Nov. 30. Davis said this year, to make sure every child gets a teddy bear, they would need over 175 total from the event.

The COVID-19 style Teddy Bear Toss will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 at the Melfort Dairy Queen parking lot and people are asked to bring new, unwrapped plush animals for the campaign.
