Meadow Lake RCMP have arrested and charged a 40-year-old male, after a standoff that took place late Thursday evening into early Friday morning.

Around 9:30 p.m. on December 3, RCMP officers arrived at an apartment complex located on Seventh Avenue West in Meadow Lake, to arrest the man, who had outstanding warrants for his arrest on serious charges.

Upon arrival, police attempted to contact the male, who then locked the doors of the room he was occupying, refused to exit and advised that he was in possession of a firearm. He continued to retreat further into the complex and allegedly broke into several rooms to evade law enforcement.

Meadow Lake RCMP immediately secured the surrounding area with the assistance of the Loon Lake and Green Lake Detachments, evacuating the occupants of the other apartments and bringing them to a safe location. The Saskatchewan RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) was also called to assist with the investigation, as efforts to negotiate were ongoing.

After the ERT arrived, police were able to determine the male barricaded himself in a room in the apartment complex. Negotiations with the male continued and eventually the ERT gained entry into the room and the suspect was safely taken into custody. Police conducted a thorough search of the apartment complex and did not locate any firearms.

Forty-year-old David McKay of Meadow Lake faces multiple charges, including resisting arrest, multiple counts of break-and-enter, two counts of uttering threats and being unlawfully at large. He has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Meadow Lake on Monday, December 7.
