As the Town of Nipawin gears up to celebrate the holiday season, some folks are trying to foil those plans just as fast.

Sometime during the night between Dec. 3 and 4, Nipawin Town Office had some of its Christmas lights stolen, just two days after staff put up decorations. Nipawin’s Director of Parks and Recreation Chelsea Corrigan said the town has also heard of other Nipawin residents who had their lights stolen.

“I assume it’s a couple of Grinches that maybe don’t want to celebrate this year,” Corrigan said. “It’s quite disappointing but we just wanted to make sure if people notice any unusual activities, they report it.”

Corrigan said a Christmas light stealing spree is new for Nipawin. The town will replace the lights stolen from its office and there aren’t worries the “Grinches” will strike again.

“We do have cameras in quite a few of our facilities and areas around town. Maybe at some point they won’t get lucky and we’ll see them,” she said.

Despite the brief stop in holiday joy, Corrigan encourages residents to check out Nipawin Winterlights, the Christmas tree in town square, and public skating at Centennial Arena for holiday spirit. She said the town is looking to add pond skating and ice trails by late December or early January.
