Made of Steele: A brothers journey to North Stars stardom

For North Stars Jaxon and Wilson Steele, the rink has always been like a second home.

For as long as they can remember, the brothers have been skating, and while the pair were certainly involved in athletics in general through their youth, there was never any doubt that hockey was number one.

“We’ve been playing hockey ever since we could walk,” Wilson said reflecting back on his younger years. “We did play some other sports like baseball and lacrosse when we were growing up, but we’ve always been mainly into hockey, and really passionate about it since we were young.”

The pair saw the pursuit of that passion develop into their early adult years, and ultimately reunite them on the North Stars this season, with Wilson joining the elder Jaxon within the ‘Junior A’ ranks in the Battlefords.

Jaxon is a 6-2 centerman in his 20-year-old season, who boasts a rocket shot and premier offensive instincts. Wilson is an 18-year-old in his first season, standing 6-3 and plying his trade on the blue line, as more of a defensive-minded defenceman, with a physical edge.

Jaxon said looking back on hours spent playing the game on the outdoor rink, and in the basement of their childhood home in Calgary, it’s easy to see they were both honing their respective niche from a young age.

He then added with an audible wink that a little bit of brotherly love may have helped Wilson develop his penchant for shot blocking in particular.

“I know when we were younger we’d play in our basement and I’d make him strap on the goalie pads and be firing pucks at him, for sure,” Jaxon said with a laugh. “But [Wilson] has always been a bit more defensive-minded right from Timbits, and I’ve always been more of an offensive-minded player.”

Jaxon said it’s been something truly special to have Wilson come to join him on the North Stars this season, in his final year in the junior hockey ranks.

“It means a lot to me and my brother, and everyone in our whole family as well,” Jaxon said. “Playing with your brother is something really cool that not a lot of people get to experience, and especially in junior hockey.”

Wilson added having Jaxon alongside him has only helped ease the adjustment to the next level, allowing him to get acclimated to the junior lifestyle quickly.

“Being a rookie just entering my junior career, he’s been able to help guide me and really been a big support,” Wilson said. “He’s been going through [junior hockey] for the last three or four years, so it’s been really cool for me to see what it’s like too and have that support.”

The Steele brothers both said they look forward to rejoining their North Stars teammates in the New Year, and returning to the game they love, following the postponement of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season late last month.
