Humboldt Council begins budget deliberations

Dec 8, 2020 | 9:44 AM

Humboldt City Council started their budget deliberations for the 2021 Capital and Operating budgets on Monday, Dec.7.

Council got through a number of topics before adjourning the meeting after their Committee of the Whole. Deliberations are set to continue on Tuesday evening.

Overall, there is not much of a change from 2020 in the operating side of the budget as administration is proposing a 1.8 per cent average tax increase for 2021. How that is distributed will be determined at a later date.

A large portion of the budget was discussed on Monday night including various sectors: Recreation and Leisure Services, Cultural Services, Public Health Services, Public Works and Utilities, Land Development, and Amortization. The final few sectors will be covered at Tuesday’s meeting.

Topics that stood out were mainly in the Recreation and Leisure, and Public Works and Utilities sectors. There are a number of capital projects including planning for an outdoor rink and multi-sport court facility which has some funding via the Municipal Economic Enhancement Program. The city is also improving irrigation abilities at a pair of different spots in Humboldt. There is also a $50,000 ticket for floor replacement in the Jubilee Hall at the Uniplex, as well as some LED lighting upgrades at the Uniplex to the cost of around $25,000.

Council also discussed some projects on the Public Works and Utilities side that might be a welcome sight to some residents. There are multiple items that will see water main replacement projects finish up with the final portion of paving roads. There’s also a major project set for a neighborhood in Humboldt where a water main replacement and all the paving is expected to get done in 2021.

Northeastnow.com will have more on the 2021 operating and capital budget for Humboldt on Wednesday, Dec. 9.
