New program set to help Saskatchewan Chamber members hire young people

The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce has joined other trade boards and chambers to help members with hiring students and young people.

The program is in partnership with Magnet and the Talent Opportunity Program. Humboldt Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Brent Fitzpatrick said a partnership like this is very beneficial.

“As we all struggle through these very, very uncertain economic times,” he said. “It certainly doesn’t hurt to have access to support money to hire students, or to hire young people, or those of those target areas.”

The target areas include the LGBTQ community, Indigenous, women, and visible minorities.

The money is one part of the initiative as the Student Work Placement Program will provide up to $7,500 for each business that applies.

In Humboldt, Fitzpatrick said a program like this can help businesses attract more young people or students, more than they were able to before.

“You’re able to access, perhaps another student or two, or another person or two through this program,” he said.

Money isn’t the only portion of the program that is aimed to help businesses and prospective employees. Through Magnet, businesses will have access to student recruiting, and job matching.

Fitzpatrick said with the COVID-19 pandemic, programs came into effect in the summer where those who were out of work were able to access funds. He said while that helped contain the spread of the virus, it affected the job pool for local businesses.

“I really hope that this program or programs like it that are on their way for the summer are going to help get more people into the workforce,” Fitzpatrick told northeastNOW.

He added anyone with questions on the program should access the Saskatchewan Chamber website, or call the Humboldt Chamber office.
