Perhaps it’s only fitting one of the brightest in U18 AAA, would find himself in a Stars’ sweater next year.

The Battlefords North Stars announced Tuesday, the commitment of 2018 first round pick, Holden Doell, for the 2021-22 season.

Doell said he’s already looking forward to getting back on the ice, and joining the team, for his first Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season next fall.

“Obviously I’m just super happy and excited to be a North Star next year,” Doell said. “I know it’s a great organization and a great team to be a part of, so I’m really excited to get the season started next year.”

A product of nearby Martensville, Sask., Doell is coming off an incredible 2019-20 campaign, that saw the young phenom lead the entire Saskatchewan U18 AAA league in scoring as a 16 year-old.

Registering 26 goals and a league-best 51 helpers, for 77 points in 42 games, Doell’s game-breaking penchant was on full display in just his second year of AAA, with the Beardy’s Blackhawks.

As an encore, Doell then joined the North Stars for a brief three-game spell, towards the end of the team’s regular season last winter. Not skipping a beat, he proceeded to pick up another three points in his first three games with the Stars, at the ‘Junior A’ level.

In addition to his speed and shot, Doell brings a cerebral approach to the game. His ability to process the action and anticipate the play, compliments his dynamic playmaking attributes, while also making him a real difference-maker on the defensive side of the puck.

“I would say I’m a two-way player, who likes to play the game smart and fast,” Doell said, when asked to reflect on his style of play. “I like to use my speed and my shot to create offensive chances, and while I do think of myself as a pass-first player, I can shoot and score when I need to as well.”

North Stars’ head coach and general manager, Brayden Klimosko, said it’s going to be great to have Doell on the Stars’ bench, come the fall of 2021.

“It’s not very often at all that you get to recruit a high-end guy like Holden,” Klimosko said. “He’s going to be one of the best in the league. He’s got great marks, he’s a great student and a great kid. We’re excited to have him, and he’s someone North Stars fans will be happy to have aboard as well.”

In just two games with the Saskatoon Blazers U18 AAA team this season, Doell has two goals and five points.
