Alberta Clipper headed for La Ronge, ‘Perfect Christmas’ a possibility

Dec 16, 2020 | 1:20 PM

An Alberta Clipper will move through La Ronge Thursday bringing with it snow and windy conditions.

That’s according to Climate Change and Environment Canada meteorologist Terri Lang, who said the system will move through La Ronge throughout the day and taper off overnight. It has the potential to bring with it between eight and 12 centimeters of snow with more snow forecasted for areas north of La Ronge.

“When we call it a clipper, it usually means it’s moving pretty fast and of course coming from Alberta,” she said. “Because of how fast it’s moving, we’re not really expecting heavy snow amounts through the La Ronge area.”

Lang mentioned wind speeds could peak up to 60 kilometers per hour, especially in exposed areas. Since there is also going to be fresh snow, she noted the wind will bring reduced visibility for those travelling.

Lang is also forecasting for the next weather system to come on Christmas Eve and persist through Christmas Day. Since there’s guaranteed to be snow on the ground, she said residents in La Ronge can expect a White Christmas.

“For La Ronge, definitely a White Christmas, which means there will be two centimeters of snow on the ground during the day and, of course, we know that’s going to happen,” Lang said. “We may even get what we call a Perfect Christmas meaning there are two centimeters of snow on the ground and it’s snowing on Christmas Day, which would kind of be a bonus to make it a nice Christmas considering the way it’s going this year.”

Temperatures for Christmas Day are forecasted to mild, which Lang added could give residents the opportunity to spend time outdoors. She wanted to remind residents to dress warmly and to check the Highway Hotline if anyone plans to travel.
