Nipawin RCMP notices moderate November, projects normal December for calls and charges

The Nipawin RCMP’s police report for October and November 2020 showcased how unique the coronavirus pandemic has been for calls to service.

While October saw a 12 per cent drop in calls to service and a 40 per cent drop in charged person crimes compared to the same time in 2019, charged property crimes went up by 25 per cent and other criminal code charges nearly doubled.

November is when the Nipawin detachment saw a downturn. There was an 18 per cent drop in calls to service and half the charged property crimes compared to the year prior, along with similar person charges. However, there was a 63 per cent increase in other criminal code charges.

Cpl. Josh Martin couldn’t draw down the slow November to one particular reason.

“Maybe across the board, some restrictions with the pandemic and November usually being a slower month when the weather,” Martin said. “Definitely a slow down from October. In the initial stages of April and May, we noticed a downturn in calls and persons crimes. Since the reopening in June… seemingly there was an increase in persons crimes as well. Since then, it’s been quite steady for the remainder of summer and early in fall.”

Halfway through December, Martin expects December to be busier for calls to service and charges than November. He said the Nipawin detachment noticed an increased in thefts of Christmas lights and decorations in late November to early December, but that it’s subsided.

Martin said 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone, and encourages and wishes everyone to stay safe for the holiday season.
