The COVID-19 pandemic makes 2020 a year many may prefer to forget but there is hope for the future. We’ve decided to make that the focus of our series of end-of-year stories.

Melfort Mayor Glenn George was elected as mayor in November of 2020 after over a decade on council in the city.

George said looking back on 2020, there were a lot of positives, even it it was in the middle of a global pandemic.

“The biggest one of all is our Heliport,” he said. “And wow, what can you say about the volunteers and donors. They stepped up to the plate and we got it done, on time and under budget.”

The remaining money from that project will go back to the North Central Health Care Foundation for other healthcare projects. In addition to the heliport, George highlighted the MEEP funding received by the city this summer. A total of five projects in the City of Melfort benefitted from the funding and was mostly completed in 2020.

Looking forward to 2021, George will head into his first full calendar year as mayor of Melfort. He said now that a few months have passed in office, he’s learned the job and is ready to get things done in the next year. There’s one major project George said is important for 2021.

“Finally get the funding from senior governments so we can get on with the infrastructure,” George said. “So that we can start to repair our roads properly.”

He added the funding from provincial and federal governments needs to come this year to make sure other projects can also move forward.

The COVID-19 pandemic is still on the minds of everyone at this time and George said he’s looking forward to vaccines making their way through the province and getting back to “a new normal.” He said while citizens may have not agreed or liked the restrictions, people have done what they had to do.

George said there is lots of hope for 2021.

“Because 2020 was the way it was,” he said. “There’s so much to look forward to in 2021.”
