Emergency services show support for healthcare workers

Jan 1, 2021 | 8:00 AM

Emergency services lit up the Prince Albert evening air on New Year’s Eve in a strong show of support for healthcare workers at the Victoria Hospital.

The parade of ambulances, fire trucks and police cars was part of the wider “Drumroll Please” initiative organized by the Victoria Hospital Foundation.

Chris Pacey, an advanced care paramedic with Parkland Ambulance Care, told paNOW he can empathize with the additional stress healthcare workers at the hospital are under.

“If we can support those that are going through this with us, it just makes everything a little better,” he said.

In addition to being a gesture of gratitude, he hopes the motorcade serves as encouragement.

“I hope it’s just that little bit of ‘we’re starting to see that light at the end of the tunnel and lets just keep going,”‘ he said. “This isn’t the time for us to back down.”

At the same time as emergency services vehicles circled the Victoria Hospital residents were encouraged to make some noise for healthcare workers at 7:30 p.m. from their front porches, lawns or driveways.

Victoria Hospital Foundation CEO Sherry Buckler told Power 99’s Andy Cohen it was a way to say thank you to healthcare workers at the hospital for everything they’ve done and continue to do.

“So many of them are suffering from mental and physical exhaustion and many of them are burnt-out,” she said. “But each day they walk a delicate balance of service to their patients while at the same time they fear that they themselves might contract the virus.”
