Mild temperatures expected to continue for the northeast

The new year continues to bring mild temperatures along with it.

The mild spell in Saskatchewan is expected to last for at least another week to 10 days.

Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang said there aren’t any records broken temperature-wise, but the length of time that we are seeing the mild conditions is the unusual part.

“We do know for this time of year that the temperature can be anywhere into the plus single digits but cold wise we know can be as cold as -40 C,” Lang said. “We are certainly well above average highs.”

Average highs for this time of year in the northeast are around -14 C and -24 C for overnight.

Looking at the December statistics, temperatures around the province and Western Canada saw well above seasonal averages.

Not much precipitation is expected aside from a chance of snow on Tuesday with a risk of freezing rain.

There will most likely be some snow melt but nothing significant.

“The things that contribute to quick melt are strong winds and really warm temperatures so we aren’t expecting those,” Lang said. “Just a bit above freezing and not so strong winds so melt should be slow and steady which is ideal.”

With any sort of melt during the day and then freezing overnight, that can cause issues on the highways. Motorists are encouraged to check the highway hotline before venturing out.

“People can get out and enjoy the nice weather because as I said, it can be much colder,” Lang said.

Highs of zero are expected this week with lows around – 13 C.
