A twist on tradition

2021 Snowarama to be held throughout province this year

Snowmobilers across the province will have an opportunity to hit the trails for a good cause next month, at the 44th Annual Snowarama in support of Easter Seals.

Traditionally the event has been held on a specifically groomed and marked trail around Yorkton, measuring between 100 and 150 kilometers, and would also include a breakfast, midpoint lunch, and awards banquet. However due to the ongoing pandemic, the large gathering aspect is not possible, leading to a new twist for 2021.

Instead, this year those wishing to take part are eligible to ride from wherever they might be located across Saskatchewan, and for whatever distance works best for them, any time between Feb. 15 and 27.

Registrants raising the minimum pledge are also eligible to receive rider packs, including gift cards for fuel and meals among other things. Packs can be delivered via mail or picked up at one of the various SaskAbilities branch locations stationed around the province, including in Saskatoon and Prince Albert.

Community relations coordinator with SaskAbilities Yorkton Branch, Deana Jesmer, said while it’s unfortunate they cannot host the event gathered together in community next month, there may still be some positive aspects that emerge out of the adversity this year.

“We’re definitely hoping the silver lining this year will be that we can branch out, and maybe people who have considered participating before but didn’t want to make the trip out to Yorkton can now do so,” she said. “We really encourage everyone interested from across the province to take part.”

Funds from the Snowarama will be put toward three core programs offered by SaskAbilities, the owner and operator of Easter Seals Saskatchewan.

Those programs, including Camp Easter Seal, Summer Fun, and Adaptive Technology Services, are designed to help enhance the quality of life, self-esteem, and self-determination of individuals experiencing disability.

Camp Easter Seal is the only completely barrier-free camp facility of its kind in Saskatchewan and offers campers an authentic camp experience, including horseback riding, arts and crafts, sports, campfires and more.

Each year approximately 800 campers from across the province attend Camp Easter Seal during the summer months from June to August.

Jesmer said the impact of the funds raised go a long way to helping make those programs possible, while the event itself also offers a chance to get outdoors and have some fun this winter.

“It’s a really enjoyable event and the funds raised support an incredible cause as Easter Seals Saskatchewan allows for valuable programing for individuals with disabilities,” she said. “It’s just a great cause and a great event and we hope people will join us.”
