LLRIB extend condolences to ‘a great leader’

Jan 5, 2021 | 12:45 PM

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) are extending their condolences to the family of the late Elder Kate Ruth Sarah Hamilton.

Hamilton served on the LLRIB Council of Elders from 2008 to 2020 and she was the first female band councillor to represent Sucker River. She was a community health reprehensive CHR in La Ronge and Hall Lake, as well as a strong advocate for Elders, children, youth, and community members as she was not afraid to speak on their behalf in council meetings.

“Hamilton had the opportunity to travel across Canada and abroad. She accumulated many stories and made many friends through her travels, as she loved to talk to people,” a news release about her life stated. “She was open to experiences and jobs as she attained many certifications such as paramedic, firefighting, midwifery, and training from the Anglican Church to be a reader and lead sermons. She was also a trapper, a commercial fisherwoman, a hunter, and she enjoyed gathering teas, herbs, and berries.”

Hamilton’s family describes her as a wonderful example and a feminist who led so that others could follow her. She was a Queen Trapper and she won flour-packing championships.

Hamilton loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren fiercely and she pushed them to be their best. She lived a full and adventurous life, from her northern trapline to the other side of the world in Germany.

Wake and funeral services for Hamilton will begin Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. at Kitsaki Hall in La Ronge. Social distancing will be observed during this time and the recommendations of the public health orders are currently in effect.

“We will deeply miss working with Late Elder Kate Ruth Sarah Hamilton. She was a great leader,” the release states.

Hamilton passed away due to cancer, the family confirmed.
