The North East School Division (NESD) returned to classrooms from the Christmas break on Monday.

Director of Education Don Rempel told northeastNOW the NESD administrators are still feeling good about the decision to return after the holidays despite Prince Albert schools being closed well into January.

Rempel said the success of schools during the COVID-19 pandemic is thanks to families, students and staff following health guidelines.

“Staying home when they’re sick, whether a student is sick or a staff member is feeling ill or has symptoms related to COVID-19, people have been cautious not to come to work or school,” Rempel said.

The experience across the province has been that if there are low levels of transmission in the community then schools are a safe place, but when there is a higher level of transmission in the community there is a risk that it will get into the school.

“When we become aware of a case then we take the appropriate steps to mitigate against the transmission,” Rempel said.

In the Naicam school, students and staff returned to in-person learning today after getting the all-clear from public health following the outbreak declared on Dec. 16. There were three positive COVID-19 cases within the school according to the NESD website.

“Our schools have proven to be safe environment’s for students and staff and we look forward to continued in-person learning through the new year,” Rempel said.

The Saskatchewan Rivers School Division went to remote learning on Monday, Dec. 14 and will return to in-person learning on Jan. 18.

The Horizon School Division also returned to in-person learning on Monday following Christmas holidays.
