Sask. Penitentiary inmate dies while in custody

Jan 5, 2021 | 2:06 PM

A man serving a life sentence for the murder of his former roommate, has died while in custody.

Steven Morrisseau has been at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary since May 2019.

At the time of his death Tuesday, Morrisseau was serving a life sentence for contempt of court and second degree murder convictions.

The cause of death remains under investigation, but Correctional Service Canada (CSC) does not believe his death is linked to COVID-19. CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified of his death.

In June 2015, Morrisseau’s former roommate Jason Stinson was found dead in downtown Winnipeg, near the bank of the Red River. Morriseau represented himself at his trial in October 2018.
