‘It was absolutely amazing’: Thousands of dollars raised for Children North in days

After a call out for donations last week, Children North Executive Director Daina Lapworth said she is grateful for the community’s response.

“It was absolutely amazing,” she said. “We had donations all the way up in Wollaston Lake to all the way down to Regina. It was really cool.”

For a week now, staff at Children North have provided meals to clients of the Scattered Site Outreach Program after workers there had to self-isolate after coming into contact with an individual who could have tested positive for COVID-19. Last week, the organization released a message on Facebook asking residents to assist them then in the endeavour.

In total, Children North raised about $5,800 within 24-hours with $2,500 of it in the form of gift cards from Lake Country Co-op. Lapworth explained the gift cards will be used for groceries to ensure clients will be fed until at least this Friday.

The owners of Drifters Motel have also been providing breakfast for clients using the Extended Hours Program and the Lac La Ronge Food Bank donated enough care packages to be handed out to clients every night. On Monday, KFC in La Ronge also stepped up to provide enough food to feed 30 people supper.

“We feed breakfast to everyone else who is not staying at the hotel,” Lapworth said. “We cook lunch here and for supper we’ve been doing more of a prefabricated kind of meal, just because we still have jobs to do.”

Lapworth mentioned some of the donations have also been spent on underwear, socks, mitts and other winter clothing.
