La Ronge area families benefit from Métis Local hamper program

Fifty Métis families in the tri-communities will benefit from large food hampers as part of the COVID-19 emergency response.

“This one is just to help people through this period of time when it is so difficult for families,” said Anne Dorion, the office manager for Métis Nation – Saskatchewan Northern Region 1. “What it is, is a collection of foods identified by the local membership for Jim Brady Local 19. They put together a list of foods that were required by people between the Christmas hamper we gave and the end of the month.”

The hampers included a variety of goods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, cereal, milk, bread, flour, soup, rice, meats and more. Dorion noted the hampers were specifically designated for local Métis families with children.

The hampers were packed at the Kikinahk Friendship Centre and delivered to families earlier this week. It’s hoped the hampers would provide some relief for families in need.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Dorion explained there have been five hamper giveaways. She said another hamper will be coming soon, which will be available to Elders and single people.

“If you’re a member of Jim Brady Local 19 and you are registered citizen of the Métis Nation or at least have your application for citizenship in process, then you are eligible for the program and services the Métis Nation offers in this region,” Dorion said. “People have to apply for whatever programs and services we offer including food hampers, personal protective equipment kits, etc.”

Dorion mentioned supports are also available for citizens who are required to quarantine. Those kits include food, cleaning supplies and any other resources the person might need to sustain themselves during isolation.
