Meadow Lake Minor Hockey Association awarded additional advertisement rights

Jan 15, 2021 | 12:51 PM

Meadow Lake City Council and the Meadow Lake Minor Hockey Association (MLMHA) have reached an agreement that will provide the MLMHA with more opportunities to sell advertising.

The city granted the MLMHA the ability to start selling advertising on the boards surrounding the ice surface. Previously, the advertising rights for that area belonged to the Meadow Lake Mustangs, but the team folded in early 2020, vacating the rights for the area.

Jace Andersen, president of the MLMHA, said the new ad spaces will help the organization offset some of the operating costs when hockey is given the green light to resume activities.

“We still have the signs on the board, and people have approached us and said that they would like to keep them there, so that’s why we approached the city to take over,” Andersen said. “This will help cover the overall costs of minor hockey, that way, we don’t have to charge people as much. It’s another source of income for us.”

The city retained the right to sell advertising on other ad spaces in the arena that do not belong to the MLMHA, including the ice surface and the risers. In addition to the boards, the MLMHA can continue selling ads on the players’ boxes and the upper level wall signage. The revenue from these sales will be divided between the MLMHA and the Meadow Lake Figure Skating Club.

While the city will have the ability to establish parameters on what is deemed as appropriate advertising, it will not receive any money from the sales. It will also not be accountable for any maintenance or installations as the agreement stated those responsibilities belong to the MLMHA.

A letter from Anderson to council stated the MLMHA provides more than 250 kids with the opportunity to play hockey, and rents nearly 500 hours of ice time from the Meadow Lake Arena.
