Classic ski trail coming to Air Ronge

A new classic ski trail is coming to Air Ronge, which should be available for use in the next couple weeks.

That’s according to Administrator Gavin Willins, who said council came up with the idea in December as a low-cost way of providing an activity during the winter, but especially during the pandemic. He noted the trails can be used solo or with a family, adding it’s also an easy sport to social distance.

“They are looking at putting it in the park behind the office as a first run at it,” Willins noted. “It’s going to be a nice little trail that runs around the soccer field and up and around to the gate.”

So far, Willins explained two Air Ronge residents have decided to volunteer with the endeavour with one individual responsible for grooming the trail. The initial preparation for the trail began during the weekend.

Willins expects the trail to open within the next two weeks. He also said those who use it will need to provide their own ski equipment.

“Depending on how it turns out and how well it’s used, council will be looking at other places to lay a trail,” Willins said. “Whether that’s going to be a big, connected piece or not, I guess time will tell on that. It certainly is a way to get people out to get some fresh air.”
