RCMP thanks Meadow Lake residents, businesses in open letter to community

Jan 19, 2021 | 5:13 PM

The Meadow Lake RCMP detachment has composed an open letter to the local community and its surrounding areas.

The letter highlights local businesses and organizations that assisted with some of the community initiatives that took place during the Christmas break. Events such as the Door of Hope food drive, Christmas family activity baskets and the Christmas meals and presents provided families in Meadow Lake and the surrounding communities with traditional elements included in the holidays.

Community Program Officer Maryah Walker said participation from local businesses in these initiatives helps unite the community and increase engagement.

“[These initiatives] give us an opportunity for the community to see us in a light that’s different from just enforcement. When businesses jump on and say they want to support the initiative, it gives everyone an opportunity to work together in a manner that they don’t normally get to,” she said.

The RCMP acknowledged four young females in the Youth Advisory Committee for their role in the creation of the Door of Hope food drive. The event rapidly gained significant attention and resulted in a community-wide effort in the initiative.

Walker stated the determination and commitment from the young women continue to make a positive impact as they work to tackle more issues in the community.

“These four young ladies volunteered to be a part of something new in Saskatchewan with our detachment with these advisory committees, and the focus of the committee is for them to experience different elements of policing, give back and bring awareness to issues in the community,” Walker said. “What’s important to the youth is what matters to them, and they came up with the idea of wanting to give back and pay it forward which is how this all started.”

Walker added the detachment wanted to share the letter with the community to demonstrate the significance of the community’s effort and express gratitude for the unified contributions.

“I think it’s important for people to know how much we recognize and appreciate the value of their commitment and coming together. I think it was also important for our detachment to be able to highlight something positive that’s going on in our community as well,” Walker said.

Community of Meadow Lake,

On behalf of the RCMP we would like to extend our sincerest gratitude for all of the community support with our Christmas projects organized by our Youth Advisory Committee this holiday season.

We would also like to specifically thank the following businesses/organizations for their participation and donations:

Carpenter High School, Lakeview Elementary, Ernie Studer School, Bree Vidal with North West School Division. Eatery on Main, Beg 4 Construction, Bliss Salon and Spa, COOP, Aurora Cinemas, Meadow Lake Properties and #risingyouth/Taking it Global.

These contributions allowed us to make a significant food donation to the Door of Hope, create Christmas family activity baskets, provide the fixings for Christmas meals and deliver presents to families of Meadow Lake, Flying Dust First Nation, Green Lake and Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation.

Lastly we would like to acknowledge the work of Romy, Niah, McKenna and Piper, the four young women of our Youth Advisory Committee whose idea of hosting a school food drive turned into an initiative that brought together the entire community of Meadow Lake. These young women are truly exceptional and we are proud to have them on our Youth Advisory Committee.

Sincerely,

The Meadow Lake RCMP
