Meadow Lake Library resuming activities

The Meadow Lake public library is expected to begin offering individual and family activities later this month.

Earlier in 2020, the library had paused offering services and activities to the public to prevent the spread of COVID-19. After nearly a year without these programs, the library is providing the public with a writing workshop and some take-home activities for all age groups.

Programming Clerk Tawn Marshall said the opportunity to return to community events comes with some emotion as the community often utilized the space for public gatherings and meetings, something that hasn’t been possible with the current public health guidelines.

“It’s been a difficult time for us because we’ve missed having people in as our library is a community space. Unfortunately we can’t have that right now, but we’re doing what we can to get people back and having access to the materials they want.”

The first activity being offered by the library is a writing workshop hosted by Shelley Leedahl called “literary responses to the pandemic: we’re all in this together.” Marshall stated Leedahl works in poetry, prose and non-fiction, adding she encourages people to explore creative writing.

“She’ll be getting people to work through anything that’s been coming up for them during this time, whether it’s emotional or non-fiction about what they’ve been doing. She’s very accommodating and creative.”

The workshop is scheduled to take place on January 30. Anyone interested in participating in the event will need to contact the library to register. Take-home activities will also become available for all age groups and families. The younger aged packages include games and activities while the adult ones have macramé plant hangers and tassel earrings.

The library is currently creating story/craft packs for toddlers to take home that are expected to become available in the coming weeks. The toddler packs are designed to help replace the story/craft activities that were held on Friday mornings, and will require a library card. The library has not announced any formal plans to resume Friday morning activities.

All of the library’s programming is free, but supplies are limited and people will need to call to reserve a spot or package.

The library is currently offering curbside service and is open to public browsing on an appointment-only basis. Anyone who would like to inquire about activities or book a browsing appointment can reach the library at (306) 236-5396.
