NESD calls by-election for Star City, Naicam subdivision

Saskatchewan’s municipal and school board elections on Nov. 9, 2020 didn’t resolve everything for the North East School Division’s (NESD) representatives.

Only seven of the eight school trustee spots were filled, leaving Subdivision Five – featuring Gronlid, Naicam, and Star City – vacant to start the term.

The NESD made a third call for nominations for the vacant trustee seat during its Jan. 19 board of education meeting.

Director of Education Don Rempel said the NESD will hold a by-election if they received more than one nomination prior to closing. He said the preference is to fill the vacant seat.

“We can operate with seven trustees instead of eight for a period of time. The third option… we could re-design our subdivisions to encompass seven trustees,” Rempel told northeastNOW.

NESD previously reduced its number of trustees from 10 to eight ahead of the 2020 election. Rempel said potential nominees don’t have to reside in Subdivision Five to become a trustee, although the electors that sign their nomination form must reside in the area.

Nomination forms can be picked up at the Melfort NESD office. Nomination date is Feb. 3, and the by-election – if needed – would take place March 8.
