Premier Scott Moe condemns protest outside Dr. Saqib Shahab’s home

Saskatchewan’s premier issued strong words Saturday night following a protest outside the family home of Chief Medical Health Office Doctor Saqib Shahab.

Calling the people who did it, “a group of idiots,” Scott Moe said the harassment was, “unacceptable, sickening and wrong.”

In a direct call to the who people took part in it, Moe went on to say, “you should be ashamed of yourselves and your actions.”

As the province’s top doctor, Shahab has been the face of the province’s COVID-19 pandemic response and the curator of the public health measures currently in place.

“After months of spending virtually every waking hour working tirelessly to protect the health and well-being of Saskatchewan people through this pandemic, this is the last thing Dr. Shahab deserves,” Moe wrote.

Moe went on to admit that not everyone agrees with the government’s actions and decision when it comes to the pandemic but that, “no one has the right to harass a dedicated public servant and his family.”

He added his own email for anyone who wanted to complain about the government’s actions and encouraged people to contact their local MLA.

Moe confirmed the Regina Police Service and the RCMP have been engaged to ensure the safety of Shahab and his family and is encouraging them to investigate any potential breaches of the law or public health orders and, “press charges accordingly.”

He also added that the government was evaluating long-term security options to ensure Shahab can he can continue to do his job without worrying about, “his personal safety or that of his family.”
