No records set, cold temperatures expected to stick around until Wednesday

After spoiling Saskatchewan residents for much of the winter season with relatively mild temperatures, Mother Nature has finally hit the province with some chilling temperatures.

Some cold Arctic air has set in over much of the prairies, with the coldest air hanging in Saskatchewan. The mercury began to dive on Saturday night and continued through Monday morning. Environment Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang told northeastNOW, it’s likely to stick around for a bit longer.

“We’re going to be having these cold temperatures at least through Tuesday,” she said. “Gradual warming through Wednesday, but there’s going to be some winds around.”

While temperatures dipped into the mid – 30 C’s over the past few days, Lang says it’s been colder in the northeast region before.

“No records set in and around your area,” Lang said. “The record temperatures for this time of year are in the mid – 40 C’s, so none of those were at risk.”

Lang doesn’t expect those records to be in danger in the coming days.

With the cold temperatures, also comes safety concerns. Lang said people should dress for the weather and avoid extended periods of time outside. Wind chills have touched and might continue to be in the -40 C range at times during this stretch, leading to a higher risk of frostbite.
