‘All about the kids’: Bowl for Kids’ Sake set for 41st with new ways to participate

Big Brothers Big Sisters in Humboldt is getting set for their 41st Annual running of Bowl for Kids’ Sake.

The event sees people in Humboldt and area collect pledges and go bowling. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, things will be a bit different this time around, according to Program Coordinator Jodie Hergott.

“New this year, we are introducing virtual bowling,” she said. “So we have an app that you can bowl on from virtually any device, anywhere, anytime.”

Hergott added that the virtual bowling may be a way to bring some more people into the event, possibly those who aren’t able to leave their homes as much. In-person bowling is still available at Kemway Lanes but with restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Bowl for Kids’ Sake is one of BBBS’s biggest fundraisers for programming and in 2020, over $18,000 was raised. This year’s goal, according to Hergott is around $10,000. She said they scaled back their goal this year because all charities have had their budgets affected by the pandemic, but they’re hoping to still surpass that goal.

It’s not just bowling this year either. Hergott said people can go skiing, skating, or play crokicurl.

“Basically any outdoor activity could be a substitute for bowling,” Hergott told northeastNOW. “It’s all about the kids, and any activity you’re willing to collect pledges for, we are open to that, and we’d love to see some pictures too.”

To get started with fundraising for the event this year, you can go to their website and follow the links to get to Bowl for Kids’ Sake. Hergott added they are also using Canada Helps this year, which is an online fundraising platform. She said those collecting pledges can now expand who they are asking for funds.

Bowl for Kids Sake runs this year from Feb. 1 to Feb. 21.
